Finding Your Perfect Fit
A simple guide to measuring your head for a wig
A comfortable wig begins with the right fit.
Choosing the correct cap size is every bit as important as choosing the right colour or style. Even the most beautiful wig won't feel comfortable if it doesn't fit properly.
That's one of the reasons Your Hair Edit places so much emphasis on cap construction and specialises in smaller cap sizes.
The good news is that measuring your head is straightforward and only takes a few minutes.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, you'll need:
- A soft dressmaker's measuring tape
- A mirror
- A pen and paper to note your measurements
- If possible, someone to help you for the most accurate results
If you usually wear a wig cap, put it on before measuring.
If you have long hair, tie it back or flatten it as you normally would underneath a wig.
A Few Tips Before You Start
- Measure in inches where possible.
- Keep the tape measure snug against your head without pulling it tightly.
- Take each measurement twice to check it's accurate.
- Record your measurements somewhere safe for future reference.
Step 1: Circumference
This is the measurement most people are familiar with and is often used as a starting point for determining cap size.
Place the tape measure:
- At the centre of your natural front hairline.
- Around your head, passing just above your ears.
- Around the nape of your neck.
- Back to where you started.
Record the measurement.
Step 2: Front to Nape
Place the tape measure at the centre of your front hairline.
Measure over the highest point of your head and continue to the centre of your natural hairline at the nape of your neck.
This measurement helps determine how comfortably the wig sits from front to back.
Step 3: Ear to Ear (Across the Top)
Starting just above one ear, measure across the top of your head to the same point above your opposite ear.
This measurement helps ensure the cap sits comfortably across the crown.
Step 4: Ear to Ear (Across the Forehead)
Measure from the front of one ear, across your forehead, to the front of your opposite ear.
This helps determine how naturally the hairline and lace front will sit.
Step 5: Temple to Temple (Around the Back)
Starting at one temple, measure around the back of your head to the opposite temple.
This measurement helps the cap fit securely around the back of your head without feeling too tight or too loose.
Step 6: Nape Width
Measure straight across the natural hairline at the nape of your neck from one side to the other.
This is particularly important for ensuring the wig sits neatly and securely at the back.
Typical Cap Sizes
Every manufacturer is slightly different, but the guide below provides a useful starting point.
| Cap Size | Circumference |
|---|---|
| Petite | 20" - 20.5" |
| Small | 20.5" - 21" |
| Average | 21.5" - 22.5" |
| Large | 22.5" - 23.5"+ |
Please remember these are only general guidelines. Other measurements, such as front-to-nape and ear-to-ear, are equally important when choosing the most comfortable fit.
Why Circumference Isn't Everything
One of the most common misconceptions is that wig sizing is determined by head circumference alone.
In reality, two people can have exactly the same circumference but require different cap constructions because of differences in head shape. A well-fitting wig should feel secure and comfortable without needing to be overly tight.
That's why Your Hair Edit considers all of your measurements, not just one. Contact us to discuss custom orders, we'll always do our best to help you find the perfect wig.
Why We Care So Much About Fit
Finding a beautiful human hair wig in a genuine small cap size can be surprisingly difficult.
It's one of the reasons I started Your Hair Edit.
Every collection begins with careful consideration of comfort, cap construction and wearability because I believe confidence starts with a wig that feels as good as it looks.
Need a Little Help?
If you're unsure about your measurements, don't worry.
Send us your measurements before placing your order and we'll be happy to help you choose the most suitable cap size wherever possible.
Sometimes a second opinion can make all the difference, and we'd much rather help you find the right fit first time than have you order something that doesn't feel quite right.
Andrea's Tip
Measure twice before ordering.
A few extra minutes with a tape measure can make the difference between a wig that feels comfortable from the moment you put it on and one that never quite feels right.
At Your Hair Edit, we believe buying a wig should feel calm and reassuring from beginning to end, and finding the right fit is one of the most important steps in that journey.
