Wig Care Guide

Beautiful human hair deserves thoughtful care.

A well-made human hair wig is an investment, and with the right care it can remain beautiful for years.

A sample from every wig collection sold by Your Hair Edit has been personally worn and tested before being added to our collections, so the advice below comes from real experience as well as best practice.

Before You Wear Your Wig

Before wearing your wig for the first time, take a few moments to become familiar with it.

Gently brush through the lengths using a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed specifically for human hair wigs, always starting at the ends and working upwards.

Never pull through tangles from the roots.

Everyday Care

Treat your wig as you would your own healthy hair, but with a little extra care.

We recommend:

  • Brushing gently before and after wearing.
  • Avoiding unnecessary friction against scarves, high collars and rough fabrics.
  • Removing your wig before sleeping, or sleeping in a silk bonnet
  • Storing your wig on a stand whenever possible to help maintain its shape.

A little care every day makes a big difference over time.

Washing Your Wig

Human hair wigs don't need washing after every wear.

As a guide, most people find washing every 8-12 wears works well, although this will vary depending on your lifestyle and the products you use.

To wash:

  1. Gently brush through the hair first.
  2. Fill a bowl or sink with lukewarm water.
  3. Apply a sulphate-free shampoo to the water then submerge the wig, working the water through from root to tip without rubbing or twisting.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the cap and knots.
  6. Rinse well.
  7. Gently blot with a towel. Never rub the hair dry.

Drying

Whenever possible, allow your wig to air dry naturally on a wig stand.

Avoid vigorous towel drying.

If using a hairdryer, choose a low to medium heat setting and always use a heat protection spray.

Heat Styling

Human hair wigs can usually be curled, waved or straightened just like natural hair. However, excessive heat will shorten the life of the hair.

We recommend:

  • Always using a heat protectant.
  • Keeping styling temperatures as low as practical.
  • Avoiding repeated styling unless necessary.

Less heat means healthier hair.

Colouring

Human hair wigs can usually be coloured by an experienced professional. However, we don't recommend attempting significant colour changes at home.

Chemical treatments may alter the quality and lifespan of the hair and are undertaken at your own risk.

Storage

When you're not wearing your wig:

  • Store it on a wig stand where possible.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid damp environments.
  • Brush it gently before storing.

If travelling, use a silk or satin storage bag to help minimise friction.

Products We Recommend

Less is often more.

Choose products designed for human hair or colour-treated hair.

Avoid heavy oils and silicone-based products that may build up over time.

Swimming & Exercise

We recommend removing your wig before swimming in chlorinated or salt water. Lots of women who swim regularly have a second wig they use specifically for swimming (and condition well!) because chlorine can be hard on hair. Heavy exercise may also shorten the lifespan of your wig through increased friction and perspiration.

If you regularly exercise while wearing your wig, washing may be needed a little more frequently.

A Note About Human Hair

Every wig is unique.

Human hair behaves naturally and will respond to humidity, weather, washing and styling just as your own hair would.

That's part of what makes it so beautiful.

Andrea's Tips

My best piece of advice?

Don't wait until your wig feels dry before conditioning it. A little preventative care goes much further than trying to repair damage later.

My favourite habit

I always brush my wig gently with a natural bristle brush before putting it away. It only takes a minute and makes styling much easier the next time I wear it.

The mistake I made when I first started wearing wigs

I used far too much heat. These days I style less often and let the hair do what it naturally wants to do. The wigs stay softer and last much longer.
